Blind footballers prepare for Rio Paralympics

China's blind footballers are preparing for the upcoming Rio Paralympics, despite the danger of injuries.

The players showed off their skills at a match at the Fuzhou Disabled Persons' Association in Fuzhou City of east China's Fujian Province.

The squad was established from scratch in 2005, with a group of young men who had never played football before.

It's a brutal game. Many players get injured, as all of the players except the goalkeepers must be blindfolded.

However, the players never give up on their dreams, and are constantly working to improve their skills.

"It has been a gradual process. I taught them hand by hand and step by step at the beginning of the training phase," says head coach Zou Hongmou.

Captain Wang Yafeng found it was strange to start, because they'd never heard that blind people could play football.

"We did not know how to play. Both our members and the coaches started from the very beginning," he says.

"Now we have gained more passing skills and know how to coordinate different techniques and tactics. Years ago we had a limited understanding of how to play football but now we can incorporate some ideas from healthy athletes."

The team hope they will do their country proud, and inspire other blind players to pick up the game.
