Boyd gets first start for Phoenix

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is picking youth over experience to tackle league leaders Central Coast tomorrow.

He’s been forced into a front line reshuffle after his experienced striker Paul Ifill underwent ankle surgery yesterday.

There's plenty of competition between the A-League's leading two goal scorers – Mariners striker Daniel McBreen has age and two goals over former teammate and Phoenix frontman Jeremy Brockie.

Brockie will lead the Phoenix line which will be re-jigged to include teenager Tyler Boyd, who was denied in the last-up Adelaide loss but has another chance with his first start.

Herbert says it will be a great opportunity for the young player.

“I've always said it's not about age, it's about performance,” he says.

Up front, Boyd will team up again with last week's goal scorer Dani Sanchez, who suffered a scare today after a long injury lay-off.

“Dani, he's gone off to the doctor, [with a] sore toe hopefully not a fracture,” says Herbert.

Brockie could break his mate in the golden boot race tomorrow, and if not he will be back at training Boxing Day for another shot before New Year's.
