The Breakers have announced the return of Kirk Penney on a three-year deal.

The North Shore-born and bred shooting guard turned down multiple offers from other ANBL clubs to return to the club he helped win a championship in 2011.

Penney had a big year with the Illawarra Hawks last season, showing he still had the chops to score at a high-level at the age of 35.

Breakers head coach Paul Henare was delighted to have his former teammate back.

"Kirk is one of the game's premier scorers, as was seen last season with a standout season for Illawarra where he played a crucial role in propelling the Hawks into title contention," Henare said.

"He has always been a player to look after himself and it is that professional attitude and work ethic that will be of huge benefit to us on court, but also in bringing leadership qualities off court with players around him."

The deal is expected to be the last in a storied career for Penney which has featured stops in the NBA, Turkey, Germany and Lithuania.

He said following the birth of his daughter he was looking forward to returning home.

"Good friends and wonderful people are with the club at present and I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with them," he said.

"I look forward to being a part of the driving force that brings a wonderful brand of basketball to all supporters of the game and continue to be a part of bringing something incredibly positive into New Zealanders lives, on and off court.

"Also, some happy grandparents and family members will be stoked to spend more time with our little girl."

Penney joins Mika Vukona, Tom Abercrombie, Corey Webster and Alex Pledger as the players signed up for next season.
