The Breakers are going through one of the biggest slumps in their NBL history.

The defending champs endured an 89-66 defeat to the Crocodiles in Townsville, racking up their fifth-straight loss in the Australian basketball compeitition for the first time since 2009.

They're losing touch with the top four - and have to back up against the Taipans in Cairns on Saturday.

Breakers coach Dean Vickerman was upset with the team's first half showing, heading into the sheds trailing the seventh-placed Crocs 50-34.

"Tonight we came out with a soft mentality, they were super aggressive and it showed at half time when they got to the line 16 times and smash us by 10 on the boards," said Vickerman.

"We didn't go close to matching their intensity or intent in the way they played, that's the most furious I've been at half time this season."

Tai Wesley led the Breakers in scoring with 13 points off the bench, but the Breakers could never mount much comeback after halftime.

The defending champs sit fifth in the table, while Melbourne, Perth, Illawarra and Adelaide occupy the top four playoff spots.
