Call to arms for English nude rugby players

The NZ Nude Blacks are hard in training in Dunedin for their upcoming Test match against a visiting English team.

The game on Saturday June 14 is the unofficial curtain raiser for the All Blacks v England rugby Test at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

It's eight months since the Nude Blacks last played, entertaining a crowd of 2,500 fans as they beat a mixed-clothed Australian side by five tries to four.

But while the Nude Blacks have a full training squad, Headfirst Travel rugby manager Ralph Davies says the English invitational team are still looking for a few more recruits.

"We're after genuine Brits with a stiff upper lip”, he laughs. “And good ball skills".

Veteran Nude Blacks captain Dave Bourke is returning for his 14th test. He was in charge last time the team beat the English, and is expecting another tight game.

Meanwhile former Nude Blacks star Thomas Heaton has taken over as the team's strength and conditioning coach, and is confident his young squad’s ready for some big hits.

"The English are a very proud nation when it comes to sport, so we're looking forward to deflowering the English rose", he says.
"We're expecting a good matchup against some stiff competition."

But there's been a high profile change in venue for the big test, with the 2pm match moved to University Oval, home of Otago Cricket.

And that has a few of the debutantes a little nervous.

"I'm a bit worried about playing at a cricket ground", says Tommy Ellison.  "I'm not sure what sort of balls will be flying.  I'll definitely have to pad up beforehand and look after myself, but it'll be good fun."

Fellow new cap Zachary Penman says being selected for the Nude Blacks is a dream come true.

"I can't wait to get on the field and get a run around with the boys", he says. "Nothing better than getting your clothes off for a good workout. I'm not a rugby superstar but some nice casual pass-arounds will be all good."
