Campaign grows for Dunedin Sevens tournament

Southern rugby fans are smelling blood after seeing the half empty stands at the Wellington Sevens.

They believe the tournament could get a new lease of life in Dunedin and their campaign has come at just the right time.

One particular group of Otago rugby fans are mad about their sport, following the Highlanders all the way to last year's Super Rugby final.

They've also enjoyed the festivities at the Wellington Sevens, but reckon it's time for a change.

"Landers Army invaded the capital for the Super 15 final -- obviously took the treats up there, and you know now we want to take their event, the Sevens," fan Andrew James says.

Once a massive party weekend in the capital, crowds for the tournament have fallen steadily in recent years.

Sevens fan and "Bring the 7s to Dunedin" founder Hamish Walker believes moving it south could help reinvigorate the event.

"I've had hundreds of messages of support from throughout Otago and Southland. And there's real genuine interest from the community and the wider South Island of getting the event here," he says.

More than 7000 people have joined his Facebook campaign, which also has the backing of many local businesses.

"Dunedin's a huge rugby city. Lots and lots of rugby supporters, a lot of students -- we've got all the fun happening with all the students. And we've got the perfect stadium," another fan, Liz Riggir, says.

Forsyth Barr Stadium management wouldn't comment on a possible bid, except to say: "Should there be an opportunity to look at hosting this Sevens tournament, we would consider this."

"I mean at the end of the day, these events have life cycles. And unfortunately for Wellington it could be coming to an end for them," Mr Walker says.

New Zealand Rugby has the Sevens World Series contract for three more years.

Chief executive Steve Tew says they'll carry out a comprehensive review of this year's tournament before deciding on a future host by the end of March.
