Cath Cheatley has finished second overall while fellow New Zealander Rushlee Buchanan was best young rider at the conclusion of the Cascade Cycling Classic in Oregon.

Cheatley finished the final circuit stage in second place, with the select breakaway of four riders unaware that Canadian Tara Whitten had gone clear on the final climb of the day.

The New Zealander thought she had won the stage after edging out US champion Mara Abbott in the sprint finish, but had to settle for second on the day. Abbott took out the overall honours with Cheatley second on general classification, 1min 42sec behind the winner.

Buchanan (Te Awamutu), also riding for Colavita Baci, finished in the peloton to take out the best young rider category in fifth place overall, 5min 57secs down.

The 2008 world pursuit champion Alison Shanks (Dunedin), preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, also finished in the elite group of four riders behind the winner Whitten today to finish 15th overall.

Christchurch’s Joanne Kiesanowski (Team Tibco), who won the criterium two days ago, finished in the peloton along with Auckland’s Toni Bradshaw.

Hawkes Bay rider Jeremy Vennell (Team Bissell) was the best of the New Zealand men in fourth place overall, 1min 27sec behind winner Rory Sutherland (USA).
