Super Rugby champions the Chiefs have had to cancel their pre-season match against French club Toulon.

Neither team were able to get the required approval from their national bodies and injury, unavailability of players and travel considerations also contributed to the decision to cancel.

"The Toulon match was always contingent on us being able to take a full strength squad," Chiefs CEO Andrew Flexman said.

"Due to our circumstances this has changed so now we will put our focus on our existing pre-season campaign and an important season ahead.  We have not ruled out playing matches off-shore in the future."

Flexman said the Chiefs hadn't ruled out playing future matches off-shore.

The Chiefs pre-season consists of a game against the Reds at Toowoomba Sports Ground in Australia on the 8th of February and at home against the Blues a week later.
