The Breakers won't relinquish their ANBL basketball crown without a fight after last night's crucial 85-74 home win over the Cairns Taipans.

They've been written off by nearly everyone, but all the criticism has just brought the team closer together according to Breakers centre Alex Pledger.

"I think it's just ignoring some of the chatter that was talked about for a little while. It kind of made us more of a tight-knit group. We spoke about it and shrugged that off," Pledger said.

Their third straight win has lifted them into the last playoff spot which the Breakers can hold by equalling or bettering rival Adelaide's results in this final week of the regular season.

A two game final series against Melbourne United, and the same results or better than playoffs rivals Adelaide will seal fourth spot for the Breakers in the finals.

Pledger is confident the team has enough in the tank to hold their position.

"We've got a bunch of guys who have been on all four championship teams or been on three or at least got one and that experience has definitely come through in the last couple of games and hopefully we'll be able to keep our little winning streak going over the next two games."
