World No.1 Jason Day has started his US Open tilt poorly, falling eight shots off the pace early in his opening round at Oakmont Country Club.

Day is four over through nine holes in his rain-delayed first round hoping to turn around his fortunes over the 27 holes he has left on Friday.

New Zealander Danny Lee has finished his first round at one-under leaving him tied for eight while major debutant Tim Wilkinson carded a respectable one-over in his first round

Half the field, including Day and Wilkinson, are facing a 36-hole marathon as players try to catch up from a thunderstorm-affected first day.

Earlier little known American Andrew Landry bested golfing titans Gary Player and Ben Hogan in posting the lowest opening round at Oakmont in US Open history.

Fellow American Scott Piercy joins him on top at four under through 14 holes.

England's Lee Westwood, who is chasing a maiden major after coming close on numerous occasions, closed birdie, birdie for a 67 to be third.

Adam Scott leads the Australian charge with the former Masters champion at even par through nine holes.

Defending champion and world No.2 Jordan Spieth shot 72 while world No.3 Rory McIlroy struggled to a 77.
