The English media and former players haven't held back in their fiery assumptions of England's shock 2-1 loss to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Iceland overturned an early 1-0 deficit to leave the English embarrassed as they marched on to book a quarter-finals date with tournament hosts France.

England manager Roy Hodgson resigned following the defeat, which some are claiming is the country's worst ever performance.

Here is some of the best English reactions and 'feedback' on Hodgson and his former England side.

"Have I ever seen England play worse? No, I don't think so. That was shambolic performance - especially second half," - Jamie Carragher, former England and Liverpool defender.

"The mistakes for the first two goals came in the first half but for a group of players to not have any idea on the pitch, to panic; we didn't really have too many chances, people were doing stupid things with the ball, shooting from stupid areas, the set-pieces...

"I don't think I can remember anything as bad as that really for England."

"It's difficult to find words to describe what we've all just seen. I was sat with Martin Tyler and our mouths were wide open. It's the lowest point that I can remember," - Alan Smith, English commentator and former Arsenal and Leicester striker.

"You don't like to use words like disastrous, but it was a calamity tonight. I've heard words like spineless banded about, lack of character, too much money, and these accusations have been going around for a long time whenever we have a bad result, but I’m not having that.

"I've been out there, and as an England player I know what it's like, and you feel the weight of expectation, of desperation from the fans in the stadium and back home.

"You know what's going to be said in the papers and on TV if you lose that match, and you can't help but let that affect your game, and that's what it did."

"It looked to me as if Roy [Hodgson] was making it up as he was going along," - Alan Shearer, former England and Newcastle striker.

"He didn't have a system, he didn't know his best players, tactically inept, there were players in the squad who didn't deserve to be in the squad. How on earth can he pick Jack Wilshere, who hasn't started a game or hasn't played 90 minutes for over a year?

"Raheem Sterling, he's put his neck on the line for him and he hasn't performed, hasn't been playing for his team. We can go on and on. Harry Kane on corners in the first game? I mean, the list is endless. I mean, from start to finish, it's been pretty hopeless."

"I didn't expect us to win this tournament, and I never said we were going to have a chance of winning it," - Rio Ferdinand, former Manchester United and England defender.

"I thought we'd come out of this tournament, because of the young players we've got and the work ethic they've shown in games going by as individuals, I thought we'd have a chance of coming out of this tournament with a little bit of positivity. It's absolutely gone.
