Reports in England suggest Jose Mourinho has been in discussions with Manchester United to take over as manager from Louis van Gaal at the end of the season.

United have endured another second-rate campaign under Dutchman Van Gaal despite significant investment in players from the club's owners, and executives at the club are believed to be looking at a replacement.

The Daily Express is reporting that Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea at the end of last year, is interesting executives at the Manchester club and could take the job from Van Gaal, who has had his fair share of detractors while in charge of the Red Devils.

Another British newspaper, The Daily Star, reported that Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward has already made up his mind to fire Van Gaal at the conclusion of the 2015/16 campaign.

Fierce rivals Manchester City have signed arguably the most celebrated manager in world football for next season, in the form of current Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola -- and that is believed to have spurred United on to sign a marquee coach themselves.
