The Breakers are about to get an early look at their NBL rivals as they head across the Tasman for the Australian Basketball Challenge from Friday.

Their first few weeks of pre-season have been blighted by injuries to key personal, but familiarity is helping the situation.

Corey Webster and Kirk Penney both skipped Wednesday's practice.

It's a disruption coach Paul Henare has to deal with.

"We just work with what we have and continue to try and get these guys healthy, and whenever we do get everyone on court it'll be a fun day," Henare said.

Penney's history with the club makes his return easier, while Henare's elevation from assistant to head coach won't see an overhaul of the game plan.

The team heads to Brisbane for another preseason hit out at the Australian Basketball Challenge, with development and wins top of the agenda.
