The Olympics will add five new sports for the Tokyo 2020 Games, including skateboarding and surfing.

Climbing, karate and baseball/softball have also been added by the International Olympic Committee.

The five new sports will include 18 events and will not replace any of the 28 sports already on the Tokyo schedule.

"This package of events represents both traditional and emerging, youth-focused events, all of which are popular both in Japan and internationally," said a statement from the Tokyo 2020 organising committee.

Baseball and softball made a joint bid to be readmitted after both featuring separately between 1992 and 2008.
