When looking back on the sporting year, nothing grabbed New Zealand's attention and emotion like the America's Cup in San Francisco.
While the trophy didn't return home with Emirates Team New Zealand, the crew and occasion were embraced by Kiwi fans regardless.
Speaking to Firstline, Dalton said that the emotions are still raw for him.
"It's better for sure, but there's always a moment that will happen in any day or evening that will make you remember and ask yourself the question: at 8-1 how can you not close it out?" Dalton said.
Dalton also said he doesn't regret his decision to embark on another campaign with Team New Zealand and there were three things that brought him back.
"The first was coming home and the emotion and the way the public were towards the team. The second was as the guys started signing up again and you've suddenly got this responsibility to put the money together to try and do it and really the third thing is that I've still got a bit of runway left and don't want to retire thinking I probably should have had one more crack."
