All Blacks prop Owen Franks has not been cited for an alleged eye-gouge on Wallabies lock Kane Douglas during the Bledisloe Cup.

Franks will be free to play the remainder of the Rugby Championship after SANZAAR deemed there were no incidents from the game that reached the red card threshold.

The match citing commissioner gave the Test the green light even though Wallabies coach Michael Cheika had raised concern at the incident early in Saturday's Test, won 29-9 by New Zealand.

Franks' fingers appeared to make contact with the eyes of Australian lock Kane Douglas in a seventh-minute maul.

The incident, which happened in the full view of French referee Romain Poite, was highlighted on social media and prompted Cheika to say he was "sure" it would be picked up by match review officials.

Hansen says other camera angles exonerated Franks.

"You've got to be really careful until you see all the views," he said.

"Social media were the people who alerted everyone to it. They certainly don't get all the views.

"There's a process and that process has been followed and whoever was running it has seen all the angles and believes there is nothing to answer for."

Hansen added that you could view several maul incidents from the same game and see plenty of potential eye-gouge moments.

Under the current laws, one of the few ways to stop a driving maul is to reach over, as Douglas was doing.

Franks was then using the only means possible to stop Douglas, which was grabbing him in the head region.

"It's an unfortunate by-product of mauling rules that we have because they only way you can get there is through clambering over the top.

"That creates a response, people try and pull out of the way and the only thing they can use is the head area."
