The story of former NRL superstar Jarryd Hayne has taken yet another turn after he was touted as a possibility to play for the NSW Blues in the upcoming State of Origin series.

NSW head coach Laurie Daley told The Daily Telegraph today that he if he were able to qualify, he would be considered for selection for the final two games of the series.

"Who knows, Jarryd might be back here in a couple of weeks time," said Daley. "If he's here, fit and available, we would certainly look at him for Origin II or III."

In order to claim qualification the 28-year-old would have to play for a NSW Cup or NRL team, and foundation club the Newtown Jets have offered to provide that registration.

Hayne received clearance to join the Fiji Sevens squad for the Rio Olympics after announcing his decision to leave the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.

He's yet to make any formal commitment to a return to the game of rugby league, but Daley believes it's a firm possibility.

"He's obviously decided on playing Rugby Sevens at the moment but you wouldn't say no to coming back to State of Origin this year if things don’t work out. I wouldn’t dismiss anything at the moment.

"He's only 28, Jarryd has plenty of footy in front of him. All clubs would be trying to fit him into their rosters. They would be queuing up. He is a phenomenal athlete who can achieve whatever he sets his mind to."

Hayne last appeared for the Blues in 2014 when he starred for a NSW side which snapped an eight-year losing streak against Queensland.
