It was a moment that sums up the grit and determination of the Hurricanes season as a battered and bruised Dane Coles trudged back onto the field.

After succumbing to a rib injury early in the second half, the Hurricanes captain sucked up the pain and returned to the field to help his side to a 20-3 win over the Lions.

Coles has grown into his role of captain and become an inspiring figure for the Hurricanes.

The 29-year-old has now added a layer of mental toughness to that step and pace that sets him apart from other international hookers.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen reckons Coles was more carless than heroic when he returned to the field, but it showed the Hurricanes at last have a toughness, to go with their glitz and glamour.

Sometimes it takes a feat of bravery to define an athlete.
