Johnson: 'If you get thirsty, just look for me'

We all know that Warriors star Shaun Johnson can side-step, but today the 25-year-old stepped aside, to try his hand at being a waterboy.

The Manurewa Marlins under-10 team won a competition that Johnson ran on Facebook.

"Run hard, tackle hard and have fun. If you get thirsty just look for me and I'll come and give you some water," Johnson says.

Johnson is used to distributing the ball, but today it was water he was distributing, the star playmaker armed with water bottles and often words of wisdom.

But today's guest appearance wasn't just for those on the field; it was also for the Marlins' courageous coach, Zak Ward.

"Last year in November I got hit by a drunk driver. I was just a pedestrian at my cousin's birthday party and then lost my leg about a month later, amputated. It's been hard. My inspiration to come back is my team; they're everything," says Mr Ward.

"He's a really inspiring sort of guy and for him to be hanging out with these kids is really special," says Johnson.

There was a time when he was one of the young players, and while the kids were thrilled to have met their league hero, it's clear Johnson won't be changing jobs anytime soon.

"Sort of found myself out of position a bit, but look I was just having fun, seeing who was thirsty, doing it for both sides, which was cool, and at one point I ended up jumping on the other team's side and ended up playing against the Manurewa team, so yeah just a heap of fun," he says.

It was certainly a day none of the budding young league players will forget.
