New Super Rugby Blues coach Sir John Kirwan “would hate” to see the franchise and New Zealand rugby lose star centre Rene Ranger.

Ranger has been linked with a move to French club Montpellier; one of a number of recent high profile players chasing lucrative overseas contracts.

“I know he’s being sought by many clubs,” Kirwan told Firstline.

“I hope he doesn’t (go).”

Kirwan says that Ranger was the Players’ Player of the Week in their win against the Hurricanes and it shows that he’s in fine form to start the season.

“He’s been incredible for us and he’s really stepped into a leadership role.

“I’d hate to see him go but it’s just one of those things you have to try and manager. Hopefully he gets that silver fern back, that’s the best way to keep him,” says Kirwan.

Kirwan says he was aware of Ranger’s situation and had heard about it before the news broke through media.

Ranger will have a big ask this weekend when the Blues tackle the Crusaders, with an exciting match-up looming between Ranger and centre-opposite Robbie Fruean.

Kirwan has called for Blues fans to get out and support the franchise.
