Reports indicate that Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph has agreed to take up the role of head coach of Japan with Mark Hammett stepping in to take charge of the Sunwolves.

According to the NZ Herald, sources in Japan insist both deals have been set with confirmation expected as soon as tomorrow.

The former All Black flanker has strong ties to Japan having closed out his playing career there with Samix and can speak the language fluently, both qualities highly valued by the JRFU.

Joseph enjoyed a stellar 2015 leading the Highlanders to their maiden Super rugby title, and his commitments with the side aren't expected to be compromised by his impending appointment with the Brave Blossoms.

Contracted through to 2019 RWC in Japan, Joseph will see out the final year of his contract with the Highlanders next season before joining the squad.

Hammett will remain in his role as assistant coach of the Tasman Makos in national provincial series.
