New Zealand golfer Brad Shilton fired a record-equalling eight-under 64 to seize the lead on the opening day of Victorian PGA Championship in Melbourne.

On a day where everything was just going his way, Shilton reeled off four consecutive birdies starting at the par-3 12th and highlighted by a chip in on the par-3 15th.

His bogey-free round leaves him two shots clear of Victorians Taylor Macdonald, David McKenzie and Ashley Hall.

One shot further back is the well-performed West Australian Michael Sim and rookie pro Anthony Houston.

Seven players, including veteran Peter O'Malley and defending champion Aaron Townsend, were tied fifth on 68.

Shilton never looked like making a bogey, and said afterwards there were no secrets to his good form at Huntingdale Golf Club.

"It was just solid golf, there is no such thing as a perfect round, but I didn't hit any bad shots and any bad swings I got away with," he said.

"I only missed two greens I think, 15 and 17. I holed it on 15 and chipped it to a few feet on 17.

"Huntingdale suits me. It's not a course that you have to hit it very long and I generally hit the ball pretty straight so it definitely suits me."
