Two-time Olympic medallist Nick Willis managed to avoid embarrassment during his ceremonial first pitch at a Detroit Tigers game.

Willis, who resides in Michigan, was on the mound to throw out the first pitch before the Tigers played the Minnesota Twins.

The Kiwi middle-distance runner managed to hang his pitch over the plate, but it appeared to drop just out of the strike zone.

Willis posted a photo on his Twitter account before the pitch, noting that his wife promised not to laugh if his throw fizzled out.

Earlier in the week, Willis reached out for help to avoid following Olympic superstar Carl Lewis' lead after the runners shocking effort before a Seattle Mariners game.
