New Zealand sailor Tony Mutter is part of an international crew that's just set a new monohull trans-Atlantic record.

The 30.5-metre Comanche covered 2880 nautical miles from New York to England in five days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 25 seconds - breaking the previous record by more than a day.

The crew passed Lizard Point on the English coast on Thursday.

The boat is owned by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jim Clark and his wife Kristy, and sailed at an average speed of 21.44 knots during the record attempt.

The old record was six days, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds, set in 2003 by Mari Cha IV.

Comanche's record must be ratified by the World Speed Sailing Council.

Co-team leader and trimmer Mr Mutter said it was important to be fast and reliable to achieve such a record, and he was happy for all those involved from the beginning of the project.

Australian boat captain Casey Smith said: "What a boat! Now we have got the 24 hours record, the Sydney Hobart, and now the trans-Atlantic. What a boat! Awesome!"

Comanche had been on standby for a number of weeks waiting for optimum conditions to slingshot across the Atlantic, managing a fluid rota of more than 30 world-class sailors over a three-month period, primed to be ready at a moment's notice.
