Kiwi tops Coast to Coast podium

Competitors are just crossing the line now in the annual Coast to Coast multisport race, and it's a Kiwi that'll be on top of the podium.

Set off by the iconic Robin Judkins, and after a competitive opening run, the frontrunners broke away in a group on the first cycling stage – a 55-kilometre ride into the mountains.

Female favourites Elina Ussher and Mimi Guillet-Boisset found themselves in the chase group.

But as competitors swapped bikes for running shoes, the lead pack shrunk to three – hot favourite Sam Clark leading a trio into the 33-kilometre mountain run.

Three quickly became one as Clark stamped his mark, breaking free and showing his superior fitness.

He finished the run with a near 20-minute lead, quickly knocking off the 15-kilometre cycle to the start of the kayak leg.
