Canoe sprint medalist Lisa Carrington will be New Zealand's flag bearer at the Rio Olympics closing ceremony.

The honour comes after she became the first New Zealand female athlete to win two medals at a single Olympic games when she won gold and bronze at Rio.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee says Carrington was chosen because of her achievement.

She will march at the head of New Zealand's most successful Olympic team - bringing home 18 medals in total.

Also, New Zealand BMX rider Sarah Walker has become an International Olympic Committee member after being appointed to the Athletes' Commission.
