Manchester United are set to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager, despite Louis van Gaal guiding them to FA Cup glory.

BBC and Sky Sports UK report the former Chelsea manager, who has been out of work since being sacked by the club in December, will be announced next week as the new manager.

It is understood a deal was agreed in principal between club and Mourinho before Manchester United's 2-1 FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

The club failed to qualify for the Champions League under current boss van Gaal's watch, and it's believed the board decided change is required.

Van Gaal still has one season left on his three-year deal, but the Dutchman's inconsistent run in the league will ultimately see his time cut short.

Mourinho, 53, has won three Premier League titles in two stints with Chelsea.
