Energy drinks and prescription medication.

One of sport's most worrying off-field trends appears to be at the heart of the Warriors continued punishment of the six players stood down for breaching club standards.

Manu Vatuvei, Ben Matulino, Bodene Thompson, Konrad Hurrell, Albert Vete and Sam Lisone all missed the 26-10 win over the Dragons and will play no part in this weekend's test matches after their big night out on Tuesday.

But the initial speculation of alcohol being involved has been wide of the mark.

Newshub understands some of the players in question were mixing energy drinks and prescription medication -- a concerning practice that has previously seen the Kiwis, the Queensland rugby league team and even the All Blacks in the spotlight in recent years.

Warriors managing director Jim Doyle refused to confirm the specific nature of the breach of club standards, reiterating it will be kept an internal matter.

But when asked by Newshub, Doyle acknowledged it would involve counselling and further education being provided, hardly the type of response for simply missing a team meeting.

"Our focus is very much on the welfare of those players and working with them on their different circumstances to see what we can do to support them," he said.

Doyle also brushed off suggestions his club is being disrespectful to the international game and being too harsh on the 'Night Shift Six'.

Kiwis contenders Matulino, Vatuvei and Thompson, along with Tonga's Vete and Hurrell and Samoan rep Lisone were ruled out of their respective national side by the Warriors, drawing criticism of clubs level of control on test football.

But Doyle insists the decision was made in conjunction with the NZRL and the NRL, and the two governing bodies were in agreement with the Warriors.
