A young NFL prospect has had his career take a hit moments before it began after a video surfaced of him smoking a substance on draft day.

A video of Ole Miss product Laremy Tunsil smoking a substance in a gas mask was posted to his personal twitter page 10 minutes before the No.1 pick of the NFL draft was announced in an apparent hack.

The video was immediately removed but not before other social media users were able to spread it.

Tunsil, who plays offensive tackle, was projected to be picked at No.5 in the draft but instead he fell to 13, where he was picked by the Miami Dolphins, resulting in an estimated $US7.3m loss in salary according to ESPN.com.

After being selected, Tunsil confirmed to ESPN it was him in the video.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said he was aware of the situation after picking Tunsil.

"We had heard rumors and we had done [background] work," he said.

"The video is two years old. So from all the information we have, we are comfortable with it."
