New Zealand's all-girl cheerleading team has come in second at the 2016 ICU World Cheerleading Championships in Florida.

The team of 30 Kiwi cheerleaders lost by the slimmest of margins to Team Mexico.

This is the fifth consecutive year that New Zealand has been on the podium.

In the lead-up to the event, the team was training 12 hours a day to improve their fitness and strength before they went up against 70 countries and 30,000 cheerleaders from around the world.

The sport of cheerleading is growing across the country and Kimberley Ramsay, founder of All Star Cheerleaders, says this comes off the back of the team's success.
