Warriors and former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew has come out of an induced coma and is "progressing well" after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Mayhew, who spent 131 Tests on the sidelines for New Zealand, collapsed during an exercise class before being successfully resuscitated and taken to North Shore Hospital on Tuesday night.

A statement released on behalf of Mayhew's family said he had an excellent night in hospital last night.

"John has been talking with his family and is very comfortable," the statement said.

"The family is extremely grateful and humbled by all the best wishes received from so many people. Thank you very much for all your thoughts and support."

The 61-year-old joined the Warriors after 13 years with the All Blacks and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in this year's honours list.

Mayhew also worked with the 1990 Commonwealth Games team and with squash players.

He became a close friend of Jonah Lomu during the late star's battle with kidney disorder.
