NZRL attempts to retain Aus-based youngsters

New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) is making a play for the next generation of Kiwis currently living across the ditch.

Eighteen players eligible to play for New Zealand were selected from Queensland, forming the Toa side - while the other 18 New South Wales-based Kiwis made up the Tu team.

Some of these players have lived more than half their lives in Australia, making them eligible to represent the Kangaroos and, perhaps more lucratively, play in State of Origin.

New Zealand Rugby League High Performance Manager Brent Gemmell believes this is a great idea as it provides the players with a choice.

"These players are eligible and we want them to experience that and understand that they have a choice - all we're doing is providing them with another option," he said.

One family that has taken the allegiance dilemma to the next level is the New Zealand-born Nikorima brothers, Jayden and Kodi.

Despite coming through the Broncos system together, Kodi and Jayden have decided to play for different countries - Kodi for New Zealand and Jayden for Australia.

"When he goes out there and puts on the green and gold and I watch him, I feel proud to be his brother - but if he puts it against me that will be a different story," said Kodi.

The Kiwis have made it to the top of the league world, and they know retaining the allegiance of next generation is crucial to staying there.
