A report Kiwi athletes are being put on standby in case all Russian athletes are banned from the Olympics is being labelled "entirely speculative".

Widespread systematic doping in Russia has resulted in the nation's track and field athletes being banned from the Rio Olympics, and the ban could be extended to include all of the country's competitors.

According to TVNZ, sporting organisations across the world have been told to put their athletes on standby in case all of Russia's athletes are banned from the competition.

It could mean room for more sportspeople, including New Zealanders, who missed out on qualifying to get a second chance.

In anticipation of a possible Russian ban, three crews which narrowly missed qualification for the Olympics have returned to Lake Karapiro to train, at the request of Rowing New Zealand.

But New Zealand Olympic Committee spokesperson Ashley Abbott says the report all athletes have been put on standby is "entirely speculative".

She told Newshub on Tuesday the organisation had not received any word from their International counterpart on the matter.

"Should any international doping infringement lead to a reallocation of Olympic quota spots that could be reallocated to a New Zealand athlete or team, the New Zealand Olympic Committee would be advised after the process had been completed by the relevant doping agency and international sporting federation."

Ms Abbott added she did not where the information quoted in media reports came from, or how reliable it is.
