Kiwis forward Jason Taumalolo is on his way to the US to take part in a secret NFL trial in front of a number of clubs, Taumalolo's NRL club the North Queensland Cowboys confirmed Monday.

The Daily M Player of the year is contracted to the Cowboys for the 2017 season and will head to Los Angeles to try-out for NFL clubs along with fellow NRL player Valentine Holmes.

According to a document obtained by Australian sports website The Roar, the trials will occur this Sunday (NZ time).

"Jason Taumalolo and Valentine Holmes, two of the best players in Australia's National Rugby League, have scheduled a work out for NFL clubs this Saturday."

The document apparently suggests that the clubs will have to seek permission from their respective NRL club before signing them.

"These players are considered NFL free agents and are eligible to sign with clubs after the club has received written permission from the player's National Rugby League club."

In September it was reported that the Kiwi enforcer was considering a career switch to American football to follow in the footsteps of Jarryd Hayne.

It has been suggested that a number of NFL franchises were interested in having the 23-year-old try out for them.

An Australian NFL scout said in September that the Kiwi would make a fantastic addition to any NFL franchise and he would be able to get a try-out fairly quickly if he wanted.
