Paddon's season tracking well as Finland looms

New Zealand rally driver Hayden Paddon gets the second half of his world championship season under way this weekend at what he describes as the spiritual home of rallying - Finland.

A place where rallying is an aerial sport and for the fans, a religion.

And Paddon is one of the faithful.

"This is the one that I look forward to the most throughout the year," said the 29-year-old.

"I relate it to being like the Monaco Grand Prix of Formula 1. This is the Grand prix"

Finland, with its iconic Ouninphja stage, marks the start of the second half of the world championship series which has seen six different winners in its past seven events over the opening half, including Paddon in Argentina.

But the next two rallies tested the Kiwi like never before.

His car burnt to the ground in Portugal, then three weeks later in Sardinia his car, and hopes, were destroyed again.

"I've never crashed twice in a row my career - and the speed was nowhere near I needed it to be."

The speed returned in Poland with a podium finish, boosting both his confidence and his championship standing - Paddon starts Rally Finland in third place.

"It's taken a lot of pressure off. It means we can come into this with a normal mindset."

But as always the Scandinavian drivers will be hard to beat, especially with several of the stages run in the opposite direction this year.

As if Finland needed another challenge.
