Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita has come to the defence of his manhood, saying it's not to blame for a failed jump that made headlines around the world.

Ogita was trying to clear 5.3m on Tuesday at the Rio Olympics when footage appeared to show his penis bumping the bar, knocking it to the ground.

But the vaulter has now sought to set the record straight, saying the "foreign media" made up the story.

"I'm pretty devastated that they'd go so far to make something up to mock and ridicule me so much," the 28-year-old wrote on Twitter.

Before his privates hit the bar, his leg and arm had both already knocked it out of place. But he admits the video does look quite incriminating.

"Watching again, this is pretty funny, if I say so myself. LOL."

Ogita's now trying to make the best of an awkward situation.

"To be honest, it's pretty rough, but I guess I'm in the spotlight so this might be some kind of opportunity. I'll do my best and get the results so that I get the last laugh.

"It doesn't matter if you do it for a joke or whatever, I ask you to go and watch an actual game at a stadium for once. I hope you appreciate, even a bit, what a great sport pole vaulting is."

Ogita went on to jump 5.45m, placing him 21st.
