DJR Team Penske driver Scott Pye, teammate of Kiwi Fabian Coulthard, has crashed during practice for the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint Supercars event in Queensland.

The crash happened on Saturday with a minute-and-a-half remaining during qualifying for race 16 of 2016.

Pye was in 26th position at the time of the crash.

"I must be the unluckiest diver out there," he said.

"You'd think a brake failure, or throttle jam, would be once in a lifetime - but two in a few years is not a nice feeling."

Pye was involved in a crash at Bathurst last year when his brakes failed on him then also.

Team boss Ryan Story said the crew would need to speak to Pye to understand what happened, but confirmed they had changed brake rotors before sending him out.

"He came on [the radio] and said a brake failure – we're having a look here, we'll talk to him when he gets back," Story said.

"We're glad he's ok, and just hope no one was hurt with those tyres flying around.

"We did change rear rotors, until we talk to him it's hard to say... he reported a brake failure."

The team are hopeful of a rebuild in time for today's race, with racing continuing after a delay to fix the wall.

Kiwi Chris Pither claimed pole position, the first of his career. followed by Chaz Mostert, Jamie Wincup, Craig Lowndes and Shane Van Gisbergen

The race will start at 6:15pm NZT.
