Rafael Nadal has crushed Argentine Facundo Bagnis in straight sets to notch up his 200th victory in Grand Slams, and joins Novak Djokovic in advancing to the third round.

Djokovic struggled early, but ultimately overcome Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis  7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

Nadal only dropped 6 games in a dominant performance, and could tie American Pete Sampras for seventh on the all-time Grand Slam win list, if he makes it through to the quarterfinals.

“The most important thing is a victory in the second round and not the 200 victories, it’s only a number.” Nadal said.

In the match of the tournament so far, French tennis number one Jo Wilfried-Tsonga came back from two sets down to secure a place in the third round of his home Grand Slam.

The fifth seed needed to be at his best to overcome the challenge of veteran Marcos Baghdatis in 5 sets, finally wearing down his greek opponent 6-2 in the fifth set

Venus Williams has booked a third round place, serving up a generational lesson to 20 year old Louisa Chirico, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory , whilst sister and defending champion, Serena, was too much to handle for Brazilian Teliana Pereira 6-2, 6-1.

New Zealander Artem Sitak and American doubles partner Nicolas Monroe have won a lengthy battle to reach the second round of the doubles.

Sitak and Monroe downed Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes.

Sitak and Monroe face a tough second round encounter against ninth seeds Lukas Kubot (Poland) and Austrian Alexander Peya.

"Tomorrow will be a different match up against doubles specialists, but the good thing is they have just started playing together so we might have an edge," Sitak said.

"But it will come down to execution, who serves better and takes control at the net.”

The other New Zealander in doubles action, Marcus Daniell, earlier teamed with American Brian Baker to beat Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Russian Dimitri Tursinov 6-3 6-2.

They will face 11th seeds Henri Kontinen (Finland) and Australian John Peers in their second round match late on Friday.

Meanwhile Maria Sharapova's uncertain future in world tennis hasn't stopped her from being named in the Russian team for the Rio Olympics.

The 29 year old's serving a provisional ban after he positive test for Meldonium during the Australian Open in January.

Russian tennis bosses expect the Sharapova situation to be resolved this week.
