Real Madrid have won the UEFA Champion league for the 11th time having beaten Madrid rivals Atletico in a penalty shootout.

The two Spanish heavyweights were locked up at 1-1 after full time and with the 30 minutes of extra time being a stalemate, the two teams headed to the dreaded shootout.

Both sides made their first three spot kicks and Real captain Sergio Ramos calmly put away his sides fourth, but Atletico defender Juanfran hit the post and it was left up to superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to win the European Cup for the Spanish giants.

The Portuguese front man smashed the ball to the left of Atletico Goal Keeper Jan Olbak and the Cup was Real Madrid’s.

It’s the third time Atletico have lost a Champions League final, and the second time in three years to Real Madrid.

Madrid’s French manager Zinedine Zidane became just the seventh manager to win the Champions League having done so as a player as well.

Earlier Ramos had given Real a 14th minute lead, knocking in a Toni Kroos free-kick from close range, his second Champions League final goal in three years.

Atletico striker Antione Griezman missed a penalty two minutes into the second half, but 12 minutes from time substitute Yannick Carrasco hit home a Saul cross to square the ledger.

Neither side had a clear cut chance in the remaining 12 minutes and extra time proved just as dull as both teams played it cautious.

It’s the third consecutive year a La Liga side has won the Champions League following Barcelona’s triumph last year and Real’s 2013 victory over Atletico.
