52 balls of brutal batting from AB De Villiers and a majestic 53 ball hundred from Virat Kohli has ruined Brendon McCullums IPL captaincy debut at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.

De Villiers smashed 129 from 52 balls, while the Indian Test Captain manipulated McCullums field settings with a wonderful 109 from 55 balls, as the Royal Challengers of Bangalore pair put the sword to a shell-shocked Gujarat Lions.

The result was a 229 run partnership, a score of 248 for 1 and a record IPL margin of victory, a humiliating 144 runs.

The win was invaluable to Royal Challenges, defeat would have eliminated them from the playoffs. The margin of victory gives the Challengers the best net run-rate in the competition.

In reply, failures by key power hitters Dwayne Smith, McCullum and Darren Bravo, saw the Lions all out for 104 ,with only 37 from Aaron Finch providing any resistance.

McCullums Lions side do  remain in a semi - final spot with two games to play, whilst the Challengers need to win their last 3 games to secure a playoff berth.
