The New Zealand track cycling team will head overseas this weekend to continue their build up to Rio.

Double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston's earned himself a spot in the group, but selection is still some way off.

Roulston admits the switch from the road to the track has taken plenty of hard work, and there's still more to be done.

"It's been a process, but I knew it wasn't going to be one weekend and back into it and I'm flying. But everything's been going well, it's a great feeling and I have confidence it's going to pan out as it should."

A bronze and silver medallist at the Beijing Games, Roulston made his return to the track late last year in a bid for Rio selection.

With a bronze in London and a world championship last year, the pursuit team has performed well without him, but the 35-year-old believes he can help them to Olympic gold.

"They're still very young, very green," he says.

"It's one thing succeeding at world level but Olympics is a step up. There's a lot off the bike also that I can bring experience to and help the boys."

After a disappointing seventh at this year's worlds, coach Dayle Cheatley says the team will be picked on form closer to the games.

"We're not going to compromise our chances for selection decisions and all the riders understand that," he says.

"I'm happy with where the riders are and touch wood there's no injuries before then."

The retirement of the experienced Marc Ryan this year has helped Roulston's chances, but he's still one of seven endurance riders set to leave this weekend, hopefully making their way to Rio.
