Shot putter Tom Walsh wins bronze medal at Olympic Games

New Zealand shot putter Tom Walsh has claimed the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics.

Walsh claimed his place on the podium with an effort of 21.36m.

American Ryan Crouser took home the gold medal with an Olympic record throw of 22.52m, while his fellow countryman finished with the silver on 21.78m.

Jacko Gill's best throw of 20.50m wasn't enough to get him into the final as he finished ninth.

Walsh, who qualified for the final with his first throw of 21.03m, heaved a 21.20m effort to book in his place in the eight-man final.

The 24-year-old jumped into the bronze medal spot with a throw of 21.36m on his fifth attempt.
