Eight players from the team that lost the World Cup final to Australia have been retained for the 2016 Silver Ferns squad.

Experienced campaigners Laura Langman, Katrina Grant, Maria Tutaia and Leana de Bruin will all play next year while Anna Harrison returns following the birth of her second child.

Defenders Jess Moulds and Storm Purvis, and midcourter Gina Crampton are the new additions to the squad which sees Phoenix Karaka, Ellen Halpenny and Malia Paseka all drop into the development squad.

New coach Janine Southby says she's excited by the blend of youth and experience in her first Silver Ferns squad.

"I've been impressed with what I've seen this week. Obviously there's still a long way to go and we'll start bedding down some new structures and plans in January, but we've selected an exciting mix of athletes," Southby said.

"We are at the start of a new four-year cycle, so while we are looking ahead to those major events it is important that we continue to build on the platform that was set this year."
