Sir Alex Ferguson says he’s ready to let star Dimitar Berbatov leave Old Trafford.

The £30.75million striker says he’s suffering from sitting on the sidelines as Manchester United go after Premiership and Europa League gold.

While Ferguson would prefer to keep the Bulgarian striker for another year, he’s prepared to let him chase other first club deals.

"We will be taking up the option on his contract but I understand he wants first-team football,” Sir Alex says.

"It's difficult for me to guarantee that so it could lead to him looking elsewhere.

"I'd listen to what he says. His concern is he's not getting enough first-team football at 31 years of age."

It’s thought United would use a contract extension as a way of getting money back on a player who’s not expected to fetch more than £5 if sold.

Berbatov has scored 56 goals in 148 appearances for the Red Devils since being transferred from Tottenham in 2008.

He won the Golden Boot last season alongside Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez for amassing 20 league goals.

He has since struggled to get into United’s top team, and was left out the Champions League squad in May.

It’s believed he will be on the bench for United’s Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao tonight.
