SKY to Parker fight illegal streamers: 'Piracy is theft'

Joseph Parker's boxing promoters are furious with claims a number of people watched free live streams of last night's historic fight.

Parker is now guaranteed a shot at the IBF world title after beating heavyweight Carlos Takam.

The fight cost $49.99 to watch pay-per-view on SKY's Arena channel. But Duco Events boss Dean Lonergan says it's just wrong for people to claim SKY TV's coverage was unaffordable.

"That's bulls**t," he says. "There's something like 200 pubs that carried this for free, for punters. My own family got together in a group of about 20 people, and they paid $2 each to get the fight.

"That's about as cheap as it gets."

Tens of thousands of people watched a stream of the fight online for free via Facebook's live video function. Facebook user BeastMoze filmed the fight from a TV set.

SKY TV has issued a statement, vowing to crack down on piracy.

"Piracy is theft. If you are viewing something without paying for it, you are benefiting without making payment.

"At SKY we take protection of rights we have purchased very seriously. There will be repercussions for those behaving dishonestly."
