Sonny Bill Williams will make a return to French rugby after the Olympics according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

Williams has reportedly agreed to a short-term deal with former club Toulon following the Rio Olympics in August and before the British & Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in July 2017.

L'Equipe said Williams' agent Khoder Nasser met with Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal 10 days ago, while stints with Montpellier and All Black teammate Dan Carter's club Racing 92 were ruled out.

"I have no idea whether he is going to come or not and I can only confirm that the world champion has lots of choices," Boudjellal told ESPN.com.

"If it is just about the money, then he won't be coming to Toulon.

"But if it's a love story, he will find his way back to the RCT [Toulon]."

If Williams were to join Toulon, he would link up with former teammate and good friend Ma'a Nonu and former Crusaders utility Tom Taylor.

Williams is currently with the New Zealand squad for the Honk Kong leg of the World Sevens series as he tunes up to star for the country at the Olympics.

The 30-year-old played 33 games for Toulon from 2008 to 2010 after controversially walking away from his deal with the Bulldogs to switch codes.
