Kiwi big man Steven Adams has been injured in the second quarter of the Oklahoma City Thunder's home match against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Adams looked to land awkwardly on his left ankle before trying to resume.

After hobbling up and down the court for a minute, he then checked out of the match and went straight to the locker room with Thunder staff.

Adams took a little while to return to the bench but when he did, took his seat and it was clear the 23-year-old would not return.

The official line from the team is that Adams suffered a left ankle sprain.

It will be disappointing for the kiwi who had a very strong start to the match with seven points and three rebounds.

At half time, the Thunder were up 49-41, looking to extend their record to 13 wins and eight losses against a tricky Pelicans side featuring star Anthony Davis.
