The Black Caps have worked their way into an unbeatable position during the second test against Zimbabwe.

Day two saw skipper Kane Williamson become the first new Zealander to score a century against all other test playing nations, though the biggest surprise came off the pitch.

On a day when Williamson marked a major milestone, Ross Taylor was caught unawares that today is also the skipper's birthday.

And his age is significant - because he is now the youngest cricketer ever to score a century against all the test playing nations.

As for Taylor, he created a milestone of his own.

His 124 not out took him to 5529 runs, overtaking the late Martin Crowe, as the Black Caps' third highest test run-getter.

"I guess it was nice to beat Hogan, he was my mentor and he said as my mentor that he wanted me to pass that - so it was good to achieve a goal he set for me," Taylor said.

Only Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum have scored more.
