7:35pm - Will Davison wins the 2016 Bathurst 1000 in dramatic style. 6 hours 19 minutes and its over. Shane Van Gisbergen second.

7:32pm - FINAL LAP! HERE WE GO!

7:28pm - Three laps remain and Todd Kelly goes off the track. Double yellow flags are being waived instead of a safety car. This means no overtaking in the area.

7:25pm - The race is back on. Four laps remain.

7:21pm - Safety car is back out after Rick Kelly smashes into the wall heading down Forrest Elbow.

7:15pm - The race is back underway and Jamie Whincup is now in first but he has a 15 second penalty will be added onto his race. Shane Van Gisbergen is in third. Will Davidson is second. Less than 10 laps to go.

7:06pm - 11 laps remaining and massive drama. Garth Tander and Scott McLaughlin collide!! Whincup and McLaughlin make contact, but McLaughlin makes it back onto the trace and then BANG! Tander and McLaughlin hit. Safety car back out on the road.

7:00pm - Fabian Coulthard is still in the lead and Scott McLaughlin is in second. However both are trying to watch their fuel levels are we are on lap 147. Shane Van Gisbergen i s creeping up also, he is now in sixth.

6:45pm - Now Fabian Coulthard is in the lead and Scott McLaughlin is in second. Jamie Whincup is now in fourth.

6:33pm - Safety car is back out. Teams are telling the drivers to save fuel. We are in lap 136 out of 161.

6:30pm - Things are getting interesting, Will Davidson is closing in on the lead. 0.8 seconds behind. Fabian Coulthard in third.

6:15pm - Whincup now leads by eight seconds. Remarkable racking by car 88.

6:00pm - Whincup now leads by three seconds. We are at lap 123 of 161.

5:46pm - Race has restarted and Jamie Whincup is in the lead with Will Davison in second.

5:45pm - The Safety car is still out, but the race will be starting again shortly as Heimgartner's car is back in the shed.

5:36pm - And the Safety car is back out again after Andre Heimgartner's car just stops on the track.

5:32pm - The race is back underway.

5:30pm - Safety car is still out on the rack. We are now at 112 laps in the race. Scott Pye is in the lead. But only has five pit stops while most other drivers have taken six.

5:17pm - Another Safety Car will be on it's way out after James Moffat's Volvo just blew up. Not Kaboom! blow up but flames just burst from the bottom of the car. Some cars going into the pit lanes, and some are not. Could be risk for the ones who did;t pit with 50 laps to go.

5:15pm- Car 88 is still in the lead, but holds a one second lead over Shane Van Gisbergen. Fabian Coulthard is in third followed by Mark Winterbottom and Scott McLaughlin round out the top five.

5:00pm - Jamie Whincup could have fuel problems again later on in the race. Who remembers Bathurst in 2014? He currently is in the lead. SVG, Coulthard and McLaughlin also in top five with Mark Winterbottom.

4:49pm - The race is back underway on lap 96.

4:45pm - With the safety car out, All cars get into the pits and refuel and make any changes needed. Jones is alright after the incident. A half brake disc sitting on the bank on the other side of the wall. The Car is getting towed right now. 94 laps into the race.

4:34pm - After 92 laps the safety car is on his way out after Andy Jones hits the fence at the top of the hill.

4:30pm - Who wants to take a guess who is leading the race? if you guessed Jamie Whincup you would be correct. Most drivers in the garage want a safety car to come out and give them a shot to get back in the race. We are now 90 laps in.

4:15pm - Not a heap of chances 83 laps in, can you guess who is leading? Most cars have entered the pits four times now.

4:00pm - 77 laps in and Jamie Whincup has a big lead.... but the gap is closing. In the last 15 minutes the lead has gone from 40 seconds to 32 seconds. 20 Drivers still in with a real chance at victory with seven having been lapped or not taking part due to technical issues.

3:45pm - Some debris on the track. This could mean the first safety car of the race, instead of the safety car a race Marshall runs onto the track and picks it up. Mark Winterbottom has crept his way up and is in third position. Jamie Whincup in first with SVG in second.

3:32pm - Scott McLaughlin is back in the car for his second stint. His co driver David Wall has done a great job.

3:30pm - Problems for Chaz Mostert appears to be a break problem. Mostert has just left the pits also. But he appears to have recovered and running fine now. Dumbrell still in front. McLaughlin back up to second.

3:26pm - We are 61 laps into the race.

3:15pm - Dumbrell still in first! People must be getting sick of seeing that! Good news for the Kiwis though as we have three cars in the top five.

3:12pm - Disaster in the pit line. Tim Slade was in second. The Car went into the pits and while doing the pad change, it catches fire! The piston must have popped out of the caliper, allowing brake fluid to pour out and catch fire. The Car is now in the garage and it will cost them at least two laps. That suggests they should have changed the pads earlier.

3:00pm -No change at the top. All cars have pitted at least two times. Alexander Premat currently in fourth (Van Gisbergens's co driver) He is the best of the Kiwis while McLaughlin is in seventh.

2:45pm - The 888 car is back on the track but they trail by seven laps. Craig Lowndes has said the focus now is to finish the race to get some championship points. The gap between first and second is now 20 seconds after42 laps. Paul Dumbrell still in the lead with Scott Pye in second.

2:31pm - Problem for Steve Richards and Craig Lowndes. The connection from the gear lever into the gear box has broken on the 888 car.

2:30pm - The lead is now 13 seconds and is slowly increasing. James Moffat has jumped up 12 places in the race. Richie Stanaway is creeping his way back into the race after him and Rick Kelly had an incident earlier in the race.

2:15pm - We are an hour in to the great race! Paul Dumbrell and David Wall (co-drivers for Whincup and McLaughlin) are in first and second while Alexander Premat (Shane Van Gisbergen's co-driver) is in third. Dumbrell currently has a 10 second lead. Shae Davies who started in 27th is now in the garage after the car has encountered some problems.

2:00pm - The race has officially claimed it's first victim with Lee Holdsworth not returning to the race after breaking a rocker. Tony D'Alberto currently in the lead. Craig Lowndes currently has the fastest lap with 2:07.80.

Lap 20 - Scott McLaughlin is out of the car and his co-driver David Wall takes over.

Lap 16 - Lots of cars entering the pit line early and making driver changes. Steven Richards in for Craig Lowndes and and Warren Luff in for Garth Tander.

1:45pm - James Moffat forced to head into the pit stop after having some Tyre issues. While Rick Kelly's radio has gone down and his team is forced to use the good old communication board to communicate with Kelly. Whincup still leading while McLaughlin remains second.

1:30pm - Jamie Whincup still in the lead. Craig Lowndes started the race in 21st but he is creeping his way up the field, currently 13th overall. Van Gisbergen is in fifth.

Lap five - A standing ovation by the fans as the cars race to the top of the mountain to honor Peter Brock.

Lap three - Lee Holdsworth is already in the garage after three laps with engine issues. On the fifth lap the crowd gave a standing applause to honor Peter Brock

Bathurst memories: The magic that makes 'The Great Race'

By Shaun Summerfield

Sport is the home of hyperbole, but calling the Bathurst 1000 the ‘Great Race’ never feels like an exaggeration.

It is a single event which arguably eclipses the rest of the Supercars Championship which it is part of.

For one day every year, this town roughly the size of Gisborne, becomes the focus of millions of both hard-core motorsport fans and also once a year petrol-heads.

Like the Melbourne Cup, Super Bowl or a World Cup final – Bathurst captures attention far outside its regular followers.

The very name Bathurst will more often refer to the race before the town – quite something for a race which didn’t actually originate in Bathurst or even in New South Wales.

The first three 500-mile races were held at Phillip Island in Victoria, before being relocated to the 6.2km scenic loop up Mount Panorama in 1963. In 1969 Peter Brock made his debut, and four years later the race went metric, the distance stretching from 500miles (800km) to 1000km.

It’s more than just a test of speed and endurance, or even the pinnacle event in Australasian Motorsport, Bathurst’s appeal is down to the pure drama and its unfailing ability to surprise and at times shock. In todays ‘snack-able’ culture, for viewers Bathurst is a degustation; a six hour commitment.

Bathurst is Brock, Johnson and Richards. It is Greg Murphy’s Lap of the Gods … and his scrap with Marcos Ambrose. Dick’s rock and Fabian’s roll.

If you win the Supercar series, you are a champion. Win at Bathurst, you are a legend.
