Valerie Adams plans return to throwing

Two months after knee and ankle surgery, Valerie Adams is targeting a return to the throwing circle.

After a tough rehabilitation programme she's still not sure when she'll be ready to compete, but the double Olympic champion hopes to be throwing again by Christmas.

Adams was enjoying some time out today, encouraging more than 800 school kids to give sport a shot.

"It's good to do these sorts of things while you are home," she says. "At the end of the day these kids are our future of our country, [and we've] got to make sure they're in the best shape possible."

But it's her own future that Adams has been taking care of recently. Wear and tear on her knee and ankle led to surgery in September, and she's spent the last couple of months completing a rather gruelling rehabilitation programme.

Her aim is to defend her world indoor title in Poland in March.

"I'm going to make that call closer to the time because I want to go to world indoors 100 percent," she says. "I don't want to go to the world indoors only 80 percent; that's not my style and that's not how I compete."

While Adams' medical team is happy with her progress, she still has to be cautious not to overdo it.

She hopes to begin throwing again in about a month.
